Athletic injuries can cause by different ways such as accidents; a slip or heavy blow, not prepared for physical exertion, using inapt equipment or improper technique or pushing yourself too hard. Almost any part of your body can be injured during sports including muscles, joints, connective tissues (tendons or ligaments) and bones. Here are some of the treatments you can get for sports injuries.
You can treat minor injuries like sprains and strains yourself at home initially using PRICE therapy for two to three days. PRICE means protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. You first have to protect the wound from further damage. Next you must rest by completely avoiding exercise and reducing daily physical activities.
Apply ice using an ice pack to the affected area every two to three hours a day. Then use elastic compression dressings throughout the day. This will help limit swelling. Final step is to keep the wounded body part higher the level of heart as much as possible.
This means that you can ease your pain using painkillers like paracetamol. You can also use ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or creams to ease pain and reduce swelling. Drugs like aspirin should not be given to children under 16 years of age.
Physiotherapy is very effective for people who are recovering from a long-term injury. This treatment includes massage, manipulation and exercise in order to improve range of motion, strengthen surrounding muscles and restore the normal function of the affected area.
This treatment is aimed at reducing the movement of the injured area to prevent further damage. Casts, slings and splints are commonly used to immobilize injured arms, legs, shoulders and wrists during the healing process. This won’t be necessary for a long time. You have to start moving the injured joint when you are able to do so without having to experience serious pain.
Acupuncture is a healing method used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is now gaining popularity as a way of improving athletic performance. Apart from healing from sports injuries, sports therapy acupuncture is also used to increase strength, endurance and improve immunity especially in male athletes.
Your doctor will recommend these injections if you have severe or persistent inflammation to help relieve pain. More than two or three injections should not be used in a year.
Surgery and Procedures
Very severe injuries like badly broken bones may require a corrective treatment either by manipulation or a surgery to fix the bones using screws, rods, wires or plates. There are some cases where it is possible to realign displaced bones without a surgery.
The time duration of the recovery will depend on the type of the injury. You can consult your doctor and decide the type of treatment you need for your injury. Until you are fully healed, make sure to not return to your previous level of activity.
